A social network where users have ownership in aspects of it has the potential to lead to better, more ethical behavior by its users for a number of reasons.
First, when users have ownership in parts of a social network, they have a vested interest in the success and reputation of the platform. This can encourage them to act in a way that is responsible and respectful towards others, as they know that their actions have consequences for the community as a whole. In contrast, when users do not have ownership of a social network, they may be more likely to engage in unethical or harmful behavior, as they do not feel a personal stake in the platform's success.
Second, a social network where users feel a sense of ownership is more likely to foster a sense of community and belonging. When users feel connected to and invested in a social network, they are more likely to treat others with respect and kindness. This can create a positive feedback loop, as users who feel valued and supported by the community are more likely to contribute to it in a positive way. In contrast, when users do not have ownership of a social network, they may feel less connected to the community and may be more likely to engage in negative or harmful behavior.
One way that Superlocal promotes kind, ethical behavior among its users is through the use of Superlocal Points, which may eventually be converted into a token called LOCAL. These points incentivize users to be kind and civil, as bad behavior can negatively impact the value of LOCAL. Additionally, Superlocal gives users ownership through the purchase of digital goods such as Mayorships. When users invest in these goods, they have a financial stake in the success of the company. As a result, they are motivated to act in a way that supports the long-term success of the platform, which can encourage ethical behavior. Overall, the use of Superlocal Points and digital goods helps to create a sense of ownership among users, which can promote responsible and respectful behavior.
We believe that a social network where users have ownership has the potential to lead to more ethical behavior by its users due to the vested interest in the platform's success, the clarity and consistency of policies, and the sense of community and belonging fostered among its users.
